2020 Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden vowed to bring back the individual mandate for uninsured Americans as part of his healthcare initiative in a CNN interview that aired Friday. The mandate, which forced Americans to pay a tax penalty if they spent even part of the year without health insurance, was repealed in 2017 as part of President Trump's tax bill.

Biden said he would reinstall the unpopular penalty as a way to ensure healthcare for all. He further stated that "Medicare for all" would be available if people wanted but private health insurance would not be eliminated, saying "If you provide an option for anybody who in fact wants to buy into 'Medicare for all,' they can buy in. They buy in and they can do it. But if they like their employer-based insurance, which a lot of unions broke their neck to get ... they shouldn't have to give it up."

I'm sure these bold initiative will get him back in the good graces of his socialist party. How would his voluntary "medicare-for-all" be any different than 0bamacare with a "public option"? And why would employers provide expensive private coverage when they could just subsidize the MFA premiums which I'm sure will be an artificially low giveaway? Seems like a thinly-disguised scheme to just put private insurance out of business rather than ban it outright?

The hefty ‘Cadillac Tax’ is still out there, waiting to bite. It’s been kicked down the road, to 2022. Many who will get hit with it are union employees, who negotiated benefits, in collective bargaining.  Obamacare and the worst parts of it are far from dead.


Under the Affordable Care Act, employer-sponsored health benefits whose value exceeds specified thresholds will be subject to an excise tax starting in 2022. (The Cadillac tax was originally scheduled to take effect in 2018 but has been delayed twice by legislation, most recently by the Extension of Continuing Appropriations Act of January 2018.)  This “Cadillac tax” will equal 40 percent of the value of health benefits exceeding thresholds projected to be $11,200 for single coverage and $30,150 for family coverage in 2022.
