U.S. Ban on Cruises to Cuba Creates Chaos for Travelers

The Trump administration banned cruises to Cuba under new restrictions on U.S. travel to the Caribbean island imposed on Tuesday to pressure its Communist government to reform and stop supporting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

The tightening of the decades-old U.S. embargo on Cuba will further wound its crippled economy, as well as hurt U.S. travel companies that had built up Cuban business during the brief 2014-2016 detente between the old Cold War foes.

The State Department said the United States will no longer permit visits to Cuba via passenger and recreational vessels, including cruise ships and yachts, as well as private and corporate aircraft.

The U.S. Commerce Department told Reuters the ban would be effective from Wednesday, giving cruise lines no grace period to change destinations and creating confusion among cruise passengers....

Excellent move.  Our tourist dollars were propping up a regime that at one point was near collapse.

I went to a wedding in the Netherlands and found out the bride and groom planned to honeymoon in Cuba. I couldn’t help myself, I asked, “Why the hell would you go to an island run by a Communist dictatorship for your honeymoon?!” They all looked at me like I was the one that was crazy! It was the go to destination for honeymoons at the time. It seems the bottom line was it was cheap and the resort was luxurious. They told me how nice the people that worked there were and how happy there were to live in Cuba. I tried, but there was nothing I could say that would get through to them. I was the ignorant American as far as they were concerned.

If you had a ‘great time’ in Cuba, then you didn’t really see Cuba

Like going to Thereisienstadt in 1943, and thinking those Jews had it made.

I think something similar is true of many popular travel destinations, whether they are ruled by dictators or not.

Told this story before:  Once for a Caribbean cruise, Mom and I flew to San Juan, the starting point of the cruise.  On the way from the airport to the ship, I looked around at the slums we were passing through.  Mind you --  Puerto Rico is an American territory which gets gobs of taxpayer money in aid (this was years before the hurricane) and the place looked like war-torn Beirut.

And then there is Mexico where my brother, SIL and others I know love to travel to -- "because they have such fabulous beaches."  But if they ventured away from the resorts, they would see a whole different Mexico -- poverty, disease and, if they go alone, violent crime.  Wonderful way to spend a vacation -- getting mugged, raped or even killed.

Every country has its bad spots, but why the H anyone would vacation in "socialist/Communist utopias" and other third-world countries is beyond my pea brain's comprehension.

Been to some dangerous places on vacation ... mainly to our south.  I have grown weary of the security concerns, so I'm done with it.  There are too many civilized countries to explore.

I've read a number of stories about polls or questions asked to Cubans about who they blame for their situation.
Of course, average Cubans have to be careful what they say or else get sent to the Cuban crossbar hotel, but many of them blamed the U.S. for refusing to trade with them.
That is also a stock response from many non-Cuban lefties.  The fact that Cuba  could trade with every other country in the world never seems to have occurred to them.
Cuba's socialist system is responsible for Cuba's economy being in the dumps. I have to believe many or most average Cubans know that. We'll see what happens when Raul croaks...hopefully very soon.

U.S. cruise operators stop sailing to Cuba, travelers vent anger online
Reuters

(Reuters) - Major U.S. cruise operators said on Wednesday they will no longer sail to Cuba following the Trump administration’s ban on travel to the Caribbean island, angering travelers and prompting worries about trip cancellations and company earnings.

The new restrictions are aimed at pressuring Cuba’s Communist government to reform and stop supporting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“Due to changes in U.S. policy, the company will no longer be permitted to sail to Cuba effective immediately,” Carnival Corp said.
