Inmate was released from Mecklenburg jail despite ICE detainer. He ended up in standoff

The man arrested following a nine-hour standoff in south Charlotte Thursday had been released from county jail last week — after federal immigration officials had placed a detainer on him, they say.

Luis Pineda-Ancheta’s release is the result, in part, of shifting practices in Mecklenburg County on how local officials do — or don’t — cooperate with federal immigration enforcement.

Following his election in November, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden effectively halted that cooperation, and initiated a policy of refusing to honor immigration detainers.

Are they ever surprised when that doesn't end well?  What do they think is going to happen when they support illegal activities?

What stuns me is why a majority of voters elect people who don't want criminals dealt with by law enforcement. Doesn't it occur to them that they may be the next victim?
ICE is looking to grab people being released from prison, jail, or a courthouse. Why not get rid of the trash?
