This appears to be an attack on Chinese interests in this area and not the first time, it has happened in this province. The Chinese in building this "belt and road initiative" (or China-Pakistan corridor per article)  have run into these kinds of incidences.  The remainder of the article indicates this.

These guys must not be your Islamic terrorist types, not to say this lightly but the death toll was something like 1 security guard killed, 4 terrorists/gunmen/freedom fighters killed.  I think this group or one like it, attacked a Chinese embassy in the past. The BBC article makes it clear, this is about Chinese interests in the region.

The Pearl Continental Hotel is popular among foreign visitors

Three gunmen have stormed a five-star hotel in the restive Pakistani province of Balochistan, killing at least one person, officials say.

The attack targeted the Pearl Continental Hotel in the strategic port city of Gwadar, the centrepiece of a multi-billion-dollar Chinese project.

Most guests have been evacuated.

The separatist group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) said it had carried out the attack to target Chinese and other foreign investors.
