The Scare-Mongering World of Eco-Warriors
Yearning to play heroes in humanity’s oldest story.

What does the United Nations have in common with the Jehovah’s Witnesses? The Jehovah’s Witnesses predicted the world would end in 1975. The United Nations foretold how “entire nations would be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.” Both forecasts failed the test of prophetic fulfillment.

A religious person who says the world is coming to an end is a crank. A secular person who says the world is coming to an end is an eco-warrior. A religious organization that says the end times are nigh is an apocalyptic cult for suicidal weirdos like the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas. A secular body counting down to the apocalypse is an environmental organization worthy of millions of dollars of government funding.

A side note:
Were the Branch Davidians "Suicidal Weirdos"?
While some cults out there are suicidal weirdos, I think the Branch Davidians were not. They were a long standing offshoot of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and had been around for decades--something most suicidal weirdos really aren't good at (longevity). They were unnecessarily attacked in their home by agents of the Federal Government (under the GHW Bush and Clinton Administrations), besieged, gassed, and finally, burned out (although that last part has been the subject of debate).

Perhaps the Jim Jones cult would have been a far better example, but then, not all of those victims were drinking the Kool-Aid, either (some were shot trying to run into the jungle and escape).

The most apocalyptic group in the Branch Davidian instance, the one which only saw violence and eradication as an option (as opposed to just arresting Koresh while he was out for a run, and then serving whatever search warrant(s) they may have had on the Mt Carmel facility, was, in fact, the Federal Government.

For those who followed the events of that raid and siege, then, and who followed up on the investigations and results, there was much done wrong by Government Agents, and a host of questions raised about their conduct and tactics, some of which go unanswered definitively to this day, as critical pieces of material evidence were "lost", including the metal front door, which would have established who fired first.
While their views and lifestyle were not mainstream, to compare the Branch Davidians with groups which are truly "suicidal" and "weirdos" (like many jihadist organizations), may be doing them an historical disservice, and tends to prejudice the superficial student of the events in Waco in favor of Federal actions which remain inexcusable to this day.

I must note that all Christians who are Bible-believing also believe that some day (no particular date set) Christ will return, the dead will be raised, and there will be a Final Conflict between the forces of good and evil, commonly known as The Apocalypse, and that there have always been those who seek to apply prophesies to present times to indicate that the Day of Judgement draws near. Each day, they get closer to being right.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

True, on all sides.

Governments make people fear to justify their actions (even unjustifiable ones).

Other groups do the same, to gain support and money (especially money) and political power to impose their will on the fearful (Environmental groups have this pretty well refined, but many other political entities do the same, using artificial divisions to create the panicked energy in their ranks over splinter group issues, in an effort to muster vocal and well-heeled support.

Religions use the fear of repercussions for behaviour in a more lasting plane than corporeal existence, but can be guilty as well, especially if their leaders are unscrupulous. Fear of God's wrath is one thing, fear of the inquisitor is different.

Some fear of repercussions is healthy, and keeps societies from devolving into a free-for-all, maintaining behavioural boundaries which define, to some extent, that society in terms of what is or is not acceptable behaviour.
