A political expert has revealed the seven steps that have turned democratic nations into dictatorships - and warns Australia is at risk.

Political author Ece Temelkuran detailed in her book 'How to Lose a Country' the direction she claims her home country of Turkey has taken towards dictatorship, and how this pattern is replicated in other countries.

The book is written as a satirical guide for aspiring dictators while detailing the methods that political figures use to gather support, she told news.com.au....

It's about Australia and I hate the misuse of the word "democracy", but otherwise a good summation.

The second step is to ignore rational arguments and to choose your own truth.

The third step is to continuously lie which she said is actively encouraged in today's politics.

The fourth step is to take no notice of the mocking and ridicule from those opposing the dictatorship.

Seems like we are at Step 3 right now. The socialist left can't help taking potshots at anyone who dares think differently from them, and there really is no "ideal citizen" to them, since identity politics are not something to which people can aspire. While the established  parties and judicial system have as much power as ever.

I think a good argument could be made that we are at stage 5 and working on 6 & 7.
