White House refuses House Democrats' request for security clearance documents
By Brett Samuels - 05/01/19 08:29 AM EDT

The White House on Wednesday rejected a request for documents from the House Oversight Committee as part of its probe into the handling of security clearances, according to multiple reports.

White House counsel Pat Cipollone said in a nine-page letter to the committee that it was "harassing and seeking to punish political opponents," and argued that lawmakers' request showed "a total disregard for individual privacy."

The rejection of the request, issued April 1 by Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), is the latest escalation of the White House's fight against Democratic investigations.

He is going to have some trouble with this. Although it is under the State Department, the Office of Personnel Security and Suitability has dual oversight under both the executive and legislative branch by law. As these are employees of the United States, not specifically the President, matters of security clearance should be subject to as much review as possible.

I remember we were up in arms over security clearances being granted to several Obama administration advisers and demanded the same review for him.
The Ben Rhodes under Obama is a perfect parallel to this, Republicans on the oversight committee threw a fit when Obama sought to bypass many regulations and they ended up getting the FBI to reject his clearance.
