What to Expect from the US-North Korea Summit in Vietnam

FILE - U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un meet at the start of their summit on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore, June 12, 2018.

WASHINGTON —

President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un will meet this week in Vietnam for a second summit on denuclearization. In an interview Monday with VOA News Center Deputy Managing Editor David Jones, VOA’s Korean Service Chief Dong Hyuk Lee talked about the outcome of the 2018 summit and what can be expected from the meeting in Hanoi.

Jones: Do you believe Kim Jong Un is serious about ever giving up his nuclear program? What do you think he wants in exchange?

Lee: One thing is really important here: Kim Jong Un has never promised to unilaterally denuclearize his country. What he has promised to do is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. Now, the U.S. maintains that the denuclearization of the peninsula, in essence, means the denuclearization of North Korea, because there are no nuclear weapons in South Korea. From the North Korean perspective, it’s a different story. North Korea believes that the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula requires the removal of the U.S. nuclear umbrella, which has larger implications. So, the definition of denuclearization is critical. And so far, it is unclear whether both sides have an agreement on that definition.

Trump touches down in Vietnam on Air Force One for his second summit with Kim Jong Un ...
Daily Mail/UK, Feb 26, 2019

Air Force One landed in Vietnam in darkness after a flight that included two stops for refueling, one in the UK and the second in Qatar. The president waved to a small crowd that gathered for his arrival, before slowly walking down a staircase to greet Vietnamese dignitaries and the U.S. ambassador to Hanoi.

He stepped onto a red carpet and chatted with attendees of the sedate diplomatic ceremony before getting into his motorcade. The Beast, the presidential limousine, had arrived on an earlier flight.

Trump then headed toward one of the growing city's premiere hotels in a motorcade that included a motorcycle escort.

A crowd which had gathered outside it was held back by crush barriers and Trump tweeted that there were 'tremendous crowds.'

His counterpart Kim Jong Un crossed into Vietnam with considerable fanfare and a red carpet of his own earlier Tuesday – as an attendant scurried looking like his life depended on it to catch up to be by the absolute leader's side.

He had traveled by bullet-proof train through China on a 2,800 mile journey, accompanied by dozens of security guards who sprinted to surround him as he entered the Hotel where he will stay until his summit with President Trump.

Exactly. The left. The same people who themselves spent the Vietnam war avoiding the draft and agitating for America’s withdrawal from Southeast Asia through both violence and civil disobedience.

@aligncare

Right, like Trump.  Glad you recognize it.
I say this to Beto fans, Trump fans, all fans of politicians: it is un-American, ridiculous, and dangerous to be a fan of a politician. They aren't pop stars. Support them if you agree with their policies. Criticize them when they go wrong. They are servants, not celebrities. —— Matt Walsh

Subject: travel pool report #10–readout

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders has provided this readout on President Trump’s meetings earlier today with Vietnam’s president and prime minister today:

Readout of President Donald J. Trump’s Meetings with President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam February 27, 2019.

President Donald J. Trump met today in Hanoi with President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc of Vietnam. President Trump thanked President Trong and Prime Minister Phuc for Vietnam’s generosity and partnership in hosting his meeting with Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Chairman Kim Jong Un. The leaders agreed on the need for continued progress toward the final, fully verified denuclearization of the DPRK. They discussed ways to strengthen the United States—Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, including by deepening political, security, economic, and people-to-people ties, and through cooperation on humanitarian and legacy of war issues.

The leaders also committed to promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific with shared principles of respect for sovereignty, peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, and freedom of navigation and overflight.

They discussed trade issues and reaffirmed the importance of trade that is free, fair, and  reciprocal and welcomed the growing commercial relationship between these two countries, as demonstrated by today’s contract signings worth over $21 billion between United States companies Boeing, GE/CFM, and Sabre Corporation; and Vietnam companies VietJet, Bamboo Airways, and Vietnam Airlines.

Finally, they celebrated 30 years of cooperation on POW/MIA accounting missions, and they look forward to Vietnam’s chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the 25th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations in 2020.

Asked whether he'd walked back his vow to insist upon the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, Trump said he had not.

"No," he said.

Questioned later whether he planned to declare an end to the Korean War, he said: "We'll see."

If the Korean War is declared over, it stands to reason the US troops would potentially be removed.
I disagree.  Circle gets the square.

From that NY Times article, this image. We in the US, have had Secret Service Agents flank the cars of dignitaries including the President before, not totally unlike this but they were not on the run so much.
