Five Americans arrested in Haiti on conspiracy charges

Five Americans in Haiti have been arrested and are being held on conspiracy charges, according to a report published Monday.

It's not clear when the five unnamed U.S. citizens were taken into custody. Two other foreign nationals and one Haitian were also arrested, Haitian foreign minister Bocchit Edmond told CNN.

The arrests come four days after the State Department issued its highest-possible travel advisory for Haiti.

"Do not travel to Haiti due to crime and civil unrest," State advised Americans in its Level 4 warning. "There are currently widespread, violent, and unpredictable demonstrations in Port-au-Prince and elsewhere in Haiti. ... Protests, tire burning, and road blockages are frequent and unpredictable. Violent crime, such as armed robbery, is common. Local police may lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents, and emergency response, including ambulance service, is limited or non-existent."

Haiti's President Jovenel Moise took office two years ago this month but has come under strong public criticism over inflation and government corruption, leading to protests that have reportedly turned deadly in the last week.

In the early 2000s, I was introduced to a successful businessman living in Florida who was a native of Haiti.  He said no American, particularly us white people and especially women, should ever set foot in Haiti.  Exceptionally dangerous, crime ridden and corrupt.  One of the more popular crimes,, he said, is kidnapping for ransom and white people, supposed are all wealthy to Haitians, making them especially good targets.  Much of the time the ransom is paid, but the victim is killed or never found.  And the police, if they aren't participants in these crimes, look the other way.

The stories this man told were scary.  The country is terribly poor and with a lack of meaningful work, crime is a way of life in order to survive.  This man was lucky to escape.  Some generous people sent him to college in Florida and once he started making enough money, he brought his mother and 4 younger siblings out of Haiti as well. Going back to Haiti, even for a visit, is out of the question.  It's too dangerous even for him.

Here I am,wondering how it is even possible to do something so outrageous that you end up getting arrested in Haiti.

Did they forget to pay someone off,or maybe pay them with a bad check?
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!

Possibly nothing, but maybe the government is running its own extortion racket -- they will release the Americans if a suitable amount of money (ransom)  is paid.

And, there's this:

Ceremony at the Bois Caïman

According to some contemporaneous accounts, on or about 14 August 1791 Boukman presided over a ceremony at the Bois Caïman in the role of houngan (priest) together with priestess Cécile Fatiman. Boukman prophesied that the slaves Jean François, Biassou, and Jeannot would be leaders of a resistance movement and revolt that would free the slaves of Saint-Domingue. An animal was sacrificed, an oath was taken, and Boukman and the priestess exhorted the listeners to take revenge against their French oppressors and cast aside the image of the God of the oppressors." [7]

According to Gothenburg University researcher Markel Thylefors, "The event of the Bois Caïman ceremony forms an important part of Haitian national identity as it relates to the very genesis of Haiti."[8] This ceremony came to be characterized by various Christian sources as a "pact with the devil" that began the Haitian Revolution.[9]...

A year or so before he killed himself, Anthony Bourdain went to Haiti to do one of his shows.
As he was doing a bit with some Haitian chef, a bunch of  very young children gathered around to watch hungrily eyeing the food the chef was making.
Bourdain then asked the chef to make enough food to feed the children.  The chef made some and they started distributing the food to the kids.
Then some bigger kids showed up and started taking the food away from the smaller kids.
Then adults showed up and started taking the food away from the bigger kids who had taken the food away from the smaller kids.
Bourdain was dismayed by the whole thing. Maybe it destroyed his liberal view of the world where everybody was a wonderful person.
Haiti might be the worst sh*thole in the world.

Our church supports a Christian school that educates about 100 children in Haiti. We send a team down there about three times a year to help improve the school facility, install water lines and solar panels, distribute food, etc. This past Sunday, the following notice was in the church bulletin:
Quote
Please pray for Haiti. There have been protests regarding a 12 year loan that Venezuela gave Haiti called the Petro Caribe loan. The money has been squandered by the government. Therefore, Haiti will not be able to pay it back. People are calling for the officials to step down, which they refuse to do...

Americans among group arrested in Haiti with arsenal of guns: media
[Reuters]
Reuters•February 18, 2019

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Haitian police arrested a group of foreign nationals, including five Americans, armed with semi-automatic weapons, Haitian newspapers reported on Monday, adding to uncertainty in the impoverished Caribbean country after days of anti-government protests.

The U.S. State Department was aware that Haitian police arrested a group that included U.S. citizens, an official at the department said on Monday. Haitian police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported that seven foreigners and a Haitian were in the group picked up by police on Sunday night. Police found rifles, pistols, drones and satellite phones in their two vehicles, the newspaper said.

I just read the original article, I don't think that article had any of this about weaponry. It definitely sounds like some sort of insurgency movement from this? What if we had to go to two places? Venezuela and Haiti?

Either insurgency or criminal activity.
