Abrams, Omar Have Fiery Exchange at Venezuela Hearing: ‘That Is a Ridiculous Question’

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) and U.S. special envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams got into a fiery exchange on Wednesday that began with her wondering why anything he said could be considered credible after his role in the Iran-Contra scandal.

Abrams testified in front of the House Foreign Affairs Committee about the U.S. response to the crisis in Venezuela, which has collapsed under far-left policies that have decimated its economy and caused hyperinflation, starvation and medical shortages. The Trump administration is supporting Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido and said authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro must step down and leave the country.

Omar opened her questioning by calling Abrams "Mr. Adams" and recounting Abrams' misdemeanor guilty pleas for withholding information from Congress over the Iran-Contra scandal while he worked in the Reagan administration. He was later pardoned by President George H.W. Bush in 1992.

"I fail to understand why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony that you give today to be truthful," Omar said.  ...

"Yes or no. Would you support an armed faction within Venezuela that engages in war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide, if you believe they were serving U.S. interests, as you did in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua?" Omar asked.

"I am not going to respond to that question. I'm sorry," Abrams said. "I don't think this entire line of questioning is meant to be real questions, and so I will not reply."

Omar defended her line of questioning as fair, saying the American people wanted to know how U.S. values are furthered in its foreign policy.

"Will you make sure that human rights are not violated and that we uphold international and human rights?" Omar asked.

"I suppose there is a question in there, and the answer is the entire thrust of American policy in Venezuela is to support the Venezuelan people's effort to restore democracy to their country. That's our policy," Abrams said.  ...

"I don't understand why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony that you give today to be truthful," she said in her initial comments to Abrams, who pleaded guilty to withholding evidence from Congress in the Iran-Contra affair of the 1980s.

Abrams tried to interject, but Omar said she was not asking a question.

The Trump administration's new special envoy for Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, clashed Wednesday with freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., during a House hearing on the Caracas crisis after the congresswoman tried to turn focus to Abrams' history in Latin America while asking him point-blank whether he'd support "genocide" if it served American interests.

Abrams fired back, calling the line of questioning "ridiculous" and refusing to respond to the personal "attack."

The questioning was the latest moment in the spotlight for Omar, who earlier this week apologized for tweets considered anti-Semitic -- and who previously criticized what she described as a "US backed coup" in Venezuela, though many countries beyond the U.S. have recognized Juan Guaido, the opposition head of the National Assembly, as the interim president over Nicolás Maduro.

On Wednesday, Omar began her questioning of Abrams with his connection to the Iran-Contra scandal during the Reagan administration, U.S. support of the right-wing government of José Napoleón Duarte during the Salvadoran Civil War and Washington’s broader involvement in Latin America’s civil conflicts during the 1970s and 1980s.

As I’ve traveled around, speaking about my book on how extremists hijacked the Republican Party, I have been hearing from Democrats who are worried that the same thing is happening to their party. They have good cause for concern. The Democrats, to be sure, are not nearly as far left as Republicans are far right. But they are moving to the left, with the number of Democrats who describe themselves as liberal having doubled from 25 percent in 1994 to 51 percent in 2018.

There is nothing wrong with being liberal — I’m a classical liberal myself — but there is an uber-progressive wing in the Democratic Party that is becoming more vocal and influential. It is, in many ways, the mirror image of the far-right populists who have taken over the GOP. Indeed, it’s often hard to tell the extremists apart. Anti-vaccine activists come from both the far left and the far right — and while most of those who defend President Trump’s dealings with Russia are on the right, some, such as Glenn Greenwald and Stephen F. Cohen, are on the left.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), a Democratic presidential candidate, shows the crossover appeal of extremism. With her isolationism and history of homophobia (which she has disavowed), she has become the left-winger whom right-wingers love. She has become notorious as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s No. 1 fan in the United States — she claims that this mass murderer, whom she met in Damascus, is not our enemy, and she has defended him against charges of using chemical weapons.

Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar on Wednesday angered Trump administration Special Envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams by saying his role in the Iran-Contra scandal gives her no reason to think he can be truthful before Congress.

Abrams appeared at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing to talk about Venezuela, and the Michigan Democrat started her portion of the hearing by saying she doesn't trust him.

"I fail to understand why members of this committee of the American people should find any testimony that you give today to be truthful," Omar said after noting that Abrams pleaded guilty to withholding information from Congress about Iran-Contra.

When Abrams tried to reply, Omar said she hadn't asked him a question.

"It is not right [if] members of this committee can attack the witness who is not permitted to reply," Abrams said.

"That was not a question," Omar said. "Thank you for your participation."
