Democrats block Senate bill requiring medical care for babies that survive abortion

Senate Democrats on Monday blocked an effort to pass legislation clarifying that babies who survive attempted abortions must receive medical care.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., rejected the motion to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, authored by Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., and co-sponsored by other Republicans. Sasse had sought to pass the bill via unanimous consent, meaning that one senator could stop it by objecting.

"You’re either for babies or you’re defending infanticide," Sasse said before the vote.

GOP senators were aiming to pressure Democrats to state whether they believe any limits should be placed on abortion after controversial comments appearing to indicate otherwise from Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam.

Northam and Virginia Del. Kathy Tran, both Democrats, appeared to indicate last week that they supported a state bill that would allow abortion at the time of birth. Tran later said she misspoke.

The bill had the backing of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who said during his opening remarks on the Senate floor Monday that the legislation was "the very definition of something that might receive unanimous consent."

"What could be more unanimous than this? ... It's harrowing this legislation is even necessary," McConnell said.

Based upon what several liberal states have done, there is nothing preventing those states to pass laws that allow the killing of infants born after abortion failures.

The laws regarding murder remains the domain of the states.

I knew.... when Barack Hussein Obama... the only Illinois senator to vote against giving medical care to live, fully formed infants in botched abortions (the rest of the Democrat senators voted for it)... was elected President of the United States.... despite his past radical "baggage"....

that we here in the USA were on a down-trend (straight to Hell) of Biblical proportions.

This just cements what I already knew.

Yeah, that's how I read it too.  If the Reps were serious they wouldn't have tried the unanimous consent thing.

I'd like to know at what age of the baby the mother and her doctor forfeit the right to kill it.... One hour?  Six hours?  One month?   How long is the child to be kept comfortable while others discuss the murder?

I'm excited to see the GOP flexing it's bigger post-2018-election gains.  I guess President Trump was right that the 2018 elections were a "tremendous success."

I'm kidding of course.  I am disgusted that the GOP can't even pretend to give a damn about the unborn.  It's not like anything would pass the rat House, but seriously...I've lost that lovin' feelin'.  They won't even lie to me anymore.
