This sounds like it was done in the name of "Voodoo", "black magic", one of those involved is a Ghanaian, they have quite a bit of witchcraft there.  It's not just stuff seen in the movies.

Police found bizarre spells hidden inside 40 frozen limes during the probe into the woman from east London

The mother of a three-year-old girl has become the first person to be found guilty of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the UK.

The Ugandan woman and her Ghanaian partner, from east London, were accused of cutting their daughter over the 2017 summer bank holiday.

After helping a 'witch' to carry out the barbaric practice, the woman cast a series of black magic spells with cow's tongues and limes to silence police and medical experts investigating her.
