Trump and GOP taking messaging hit on shutdown

New polls indicate the American public is putting the brunt of the blame on Republicans.

President Donald Trump and Republicans are losing the messaging war on the government shutdown.

The shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history, entering its 23rd day, and there appears to be no end in sight. As Trump repeatedly declares he won't reopen the government unless he gets funding for his border wall, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) are adamant that they will not fund the project.

Trump’s message on the shutdown — blaming Democrats for refusing to concede on his border wall — isn't convincing the American public. Instead, the majority of Americans think Trump and Republicans are at fault for the shutdown, according to two new polls. A Washington Post-ABC News found that 53 percent of respondents blamed Trump and Republicans in Congress for the shutdown, while 29 percent blamed Democrats. Thirteen percent of respondents said both sides were equally to blame.

Another poll from CNN found that 55 percent of respondents blamed Trump, while 32 percent blamed Democrats. Nine percent blamed both sides.

Trump's disapproval ratings are also rising, with the CNN poll showing his overall rating getting worse by 5 percentage points since the shutdown started.

He doesn't give a crap.  They're democrat voters anyway.

Do you realize how many voters are sitting there with their popcorn...voters who didn't vote for him in 2016 but find themselves agreeing with him regarding the Southern border?

A helluva lot more than 800K, I'll bet.    wink777

They are all to blame, in my opinion -- Trump, both houses of congress, Republicans, Democrats, the whole lot of them.

If these putzes would have sat down months ago and hammered out a real budget like they are supposed to, we wouldn't be going through this mess.  How many years has it been since this country has had a real balanced budget?

Thanks @EdJames   Seems longer than that.

If these bums owned a business, it would be bankrupt.  If they worked in the private sector, they would be fired.  Bunch of lazy incompetents.

Trump is supposedly a successful businessman.  I would have thought he would have insisted on a balanced budget.  But he wants his wall and he doesn't care where the money comes from for it.  Hey, let's just print money.  That's the trick.   *****rollingeyes*****

Money for the wall is the least of the budgetary problems and you should know that.

Mexico will pay for the wall.  They will have to keep their own crooks, rapists and general riffraff instead of unloading them on us.

Plus their drug dealers will have to rely on Mexicans for their money, and Mexicans are generally broke.

The two issues are not related.
Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain.

Not exactly correct. That is the job of Congress to appropriate funds to enable the Executive Branch to perform its constitutional duties and find the funds necessary. The president only requested.

IIRC, 2006.

That was the last budget.  Since then they've passed continuing resolutions so that they could spend the one time $700 stimulus every #&^#^(@ year.

The last balanced budget is debatable, but in my opinion it was 1956 since that was the last year we didn't have more debt at the end of the year than the beginning.
My avatar shows the national debt in stacks of $100 bills.  If you look very closely under the crane you can see the Statue of Liberty.

Oops, you are correct, I misread the question!!  (I think that you are correct about 1956 as well.)

New polls indicate the American public is putting the brunt of the blame on Republicans.

New polls indicate that people are civic idiots.  We are STILL waiting on Step One:  The Democrat-controlled House to pass a spending bill.  Once that happens, the Senate can take up the bill.  If they pass it, the President can sign it.  But the Senate and President can't do squat until AFTER the House passes a bill, which they have not done.

This one is 100% on the Democrats, who are currently fun and sunning it in Puerto Rico while their most loyal supporters queue up in the outside code for a food bank photo-op.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."
