I pretty much view any GoFundMe as a scam these days. A family member started one for a friend who was "down" (Southern for "won't walk"). Member claimed "She is always doing for everybody else and now we need to do for her". It turned out that "doing" was cleaning houses for cash so it wouldn't affect her The Disability. Member used the money to buy friend cigarettes.
I would think people would be suspicious of these GFM campaigns especially after the couple and a maybe homeless man allegedly scammed people out of thousands with their phony feel good tale of a car breakdown and the homeless man giving up his last $20 to help the woman. Scam fell apart when the couple took most of the money for themselves and the homeless man didn't get his fair share.
I prefer to give money to a charity I trust. Reputable charities know who is really in need and they will allocate resources accordingly. Or on occasion I will donate to a person or family in need directly rather than go through some fundraiser. GoFundMe doesn't investigate the honesty of the people setting up these pages, so they are ripe for scams.
