Trump says he may call a national emergency to build border wall

President Trump said Friday that he is considering calling a national emergency to build a wall along the U.S.â€“Mexico border.

â€œWe can call a national emergency because of the security of our country, absolutely. We can do it. I havenâ€™t done it, I may do it. I may do it, but we can call a national emergency and build it quickly, itâ€™s another way of doing it,â€ he said at a press conference Friday.

â€œIf we can do it through a negotiated process, weâ€™re giving that a shot,â€ he added.

Trump's comments from the White House Rose Garden came shortly after he held a closed-door White House meeting with congressional leaders on the 14th day of a partial government shutdown.

Trump also threatened to keep 25 percent of the government shutdown for years until he gets his desired funding to build the border wall.

Stop saying you can do it and just do it!

I know like everything else it will get tied up in the courts, but get the court case going. I really don't believe the SCOTUS will decide they can determine what a President gets to decide is a national emergency. If they do it's just one more nail in the coffin of the Constitutional Republic with 3 branches of co-equal authority.

He has been saying that for two years. He still needs Congress for funding as this in the least, would be a supplemental from the DOD budget.

Thereâ€™s a certain psychology of negotiating that Trump uses rather instinctively at this point in his career of haggling for everything he wanted to achieve in business.

Those taunting him from the sidelines havenâ€™t a clue just how many situations, big and little, including the mundane, inconsequential things in everyday interactions with people that Trump negotiates. Itâ€™s part of who he is.

Exactly right.

He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. If the left tries to stop the Army Corp of Engineers in court, Trump can declare a national emergency and close the border all together. I think one reason Mexico is being more cooperative is their fear of the border being closed and the economic impact that would have on them.

Trump has to be prepared to die on this hill if he really wants to be re-elected.
