Located southeast of Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, Monsanto and a region have a rich history. People lived there the Paleolithic Era. Archaeologists have found evidence of Roman, Visigoth and Arabian occupations.
According to historians, a Lusitanian fortress located in the area, was conquered and improved by the Roman army, and then occupied by the Wisigoths, the Alans and others during the 8th century.
