On Christmas Day, President Donald Trump took part in a long-running practice of presidents who called troops stationed around the country and the world.

But he broke from a recent tradition of actually visiting troops and wounded warriors. He did so in 2017, when he visited wounded troops at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Dec. 21 (and invited Coast Guard service members to play golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida).

President Trump used the cover of the partial government shutdown to slip off to visit US troops in Iraq.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump met with military personnel on Wednesday at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq, according to photos from Reuters.

His whereabouts sparked speculation about what Trump was up to because he hadn’t tweeted in more than 17 hours, no press aides were in the media office and lights were turned off on the second floor where White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has her office.

It is the first time Trump has visited troops in a war zone since becoming president.

The press should have know sumptin was up when he hadn't tweeted in over 20 hours!

Guess they will have to retract the stories about him being the 1st President since 2002 not visiting the troops at Christmas

President Trump said Wednesday that he was concerned for the safety of first lady Melania Trump when making an unannounced trip to visit U.S. troops in Iraq for the Christmas holiday.

“I had concerns about the institution of the presidency. Not for myself personally. I had concerns for the first lady, I will tell you,” Trump told reporters shortly after landing at the Al Asad Airbase west of Baghdad.

“But if you would have (seen) what we had to go through in the darkened plane with all windows] closed with no light anywhere. Pitch black. I’ve been on many airplanes. All types and shapes and sizes,” Trump added. “So did I have a concern? Yes, I had a concern.”
