GoFundMe refunds more than $400,000 to donors as New Jersey couple and homeless vet face grand jury

Quote
GoFundMe says it has refunded more than $400,000 back to 14,000 donors who opened their wallets to help a homeless veteran in what prosecutors now say was a fake "good Samaritan" scam. The online fundraising campaign was started by New Jersey couple Kate McClure and Mark D'Amico to raise money for Johnny Bobbitt, who supposedly gave McClure his last $20 when her car ran out of gas. But prosecutors say the three actually made up the story and conspired to split the proceeds.

All of the money raised has now been refunded, including processing and administration fees, GoFundMe spokesperson Bobby Whithorne, said in an email to CBS News on Monday.

They had a good thing going. But like always, they all got greedy and started infighting and screwed the whole thing up. This is so common with so many criminal conspiracies involving several people. Ultimately one of them or all of them inevitably gets greedy and that is almost always the beginning of the end.

It was very honorable for the site to return all the money, since a lot of it had already been spent by the perps.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

Thought it interesting that McClure told her friends it was a scam and none of them had the decency to report it to the police, allowing so many good hearted people to be scammed.

I have no trust in GoFundMe campaigns.  One never knows whether the hard luck story is for real or if whoever sets up the GoFundMe campaign is going to really give the money to the intended recipient.  Apparently, GoFundMe has no procedure in place to investigate the campaign sponsor or to check up on the legitimacy of the hard luck story.  Maybe now that the site is out some serious money, it will be more diligent about screening these campaigns.
