The Atlantis-Style Myths That Geology Proved To Be True

As fantastical places go, the so-called lost continent of Atlantis is by far the most famous, featuring still today in songs, novels, comics and movies. More than 2,300 years ago the Greek philosopher Plato described a great war involving Atlantis, a powerful empire that ruled over several other islands as well as lands across Africa and Europe. Their power led them to seek further fortunes and they waged a war across the rest of the world. The Atlanteans were finally defeated by the Athenians with the help of the gods and '...there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune … the island of Atlantis ... disappeared in the depths of the sea.' In the 1930s Greek archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos argued that this description was based on the real destruction of the island of Thera (now called Santorini) in the Aegean Sea. When in 1600 BCE the local volcano erupted it destroyed almost the entire island. The collapse of the volcano must have been accompanied by powerful earthquakes, felt all around the Mediterranean Sea.
