Why swearing is f**king good for you
« on: December 22, 2018, 06:13:20 am »
Humans aren’t the only primates who can curse, but we’re really good at it, as anyone in the military might know.

And, it turns out, it’s good for us.

Cursing can promote teamwork and trust, and even make us more tolerant to pain, according Emma Byrne, author of the new book “Swearing is Good for You.” An interview with Byrne is available on National Geographic.

How can cursing can build teamwork and increase pain tolerance?

“Using swear words appropriate for that person shows how well you know them; and how well you understand their mental model,” Byrne told National Geographic. She also notes that at research shows that people who are swearing can withstand much more pain than people who are otherwise quiet.

More important, other primates can curse?

Yep, chimpanzees taught sign language develop signed swear words that they use not only in their daily lives, but they also teach the signed words to younger chimps.

So, swearing not only builds teamwork and tolerance for pain, it’s arguably in our f**cking nature.

I disagree.  Having to use real, adult words is much more challenging and better for all of us.

Grunting out obscenities does nothing good.

The ultimate mental workout is seamlessly integrating obscenities and adult words in new and clever ways.  Using real, adult words in all the same ways is not challenging at all.

I don't know if it is because I was out of the workforce for about 5 years, or was at a small company the 10 years before that or some combination of the two, but the people that I work with now think nothing of dropping the f-bomb over the phone with me.  And since I work remotely I've never met most of them in person and do not interact with them on a regular and/or non-work related basis.

Maybe you do feel better than not swearing.  Have you ever tried not swearing and compared how you feel?

I once had a therapist, don't ask why, tell me that I should just think pleasant thoughts while driving and let things go. I can't tell how wrong that was for me, but venting my frustration through imaginative vexation in my enclosed vehicle worked quite well to lower my blood pressure not that I recommend it for others.

@mystery-ak

My husband told me when he was two years old, he heard a word he really liked.  His mom found him sitting on the porch, saying, "Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit", over and over.

Can we tone down the language? It's a GD family site.

Ok, I like where you're going with this, but can we have an example?

I didn't say *I* was clever enough to attempt such a thing.  I just grunt out obscenities.

Close but not quite, I usually only throw expletives when someone does something special like try to get me killed driving insane. There was an occasion when we were in the company box truck, a twenty seven footer, and driving in the carpool lane when a moron passed us on the left were there was about two inches clearance and he was driving about ninety. I was quite imaginative in my use of the expletive that time. I can deal with slow, especially with seniors because I'm pretty sure they believe they're driving fast in their minds.
