Senate in last-minute talks to find deal to avert shutdown
By Alexander Bolton - 12/21/18 04:18 PM EST

Vice President Pence, incoming White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and White House adviser Jared Kushner met with Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) on Friday afternoon in a last-ditch effort to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Funding for 25 percent of the federal government is due to expire at the end of Friday absent a deal.

The meeting with senior administration officials and the Democratic leader is one of several negotiations taking place in the Senate on Friday as lawmakers wrangles over how to deal with a House-passed bill that keeps the government funded until Feb. 8 and also provides $5.7 billion for a border wall.

The negotiations later moved over to the House, with Pence, Mulvaney and Kushner huddling in Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) ceremonial office with Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), Freedom Caucus leaders Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker (R-N.C.).

@mystery-ak

Right now, central time 4:29 pm, waiting for "senate leaders" to speak about this after their meeting with Schumer.

No bill to vote on tonight.  They will keep working and maybe a vote tomorrow or next day or next day.

Shut the d@mn thing down!

There have been 18 or so shutdowns in the past!
Did anyone notice?

My favorite was under Regan in 1982 ...

That one was when Congress didn’t feel like working late to pass a spending bill the night before the new fiscal year started.

The Republicans were all going to a barbecue at the White House, while the Democrats had a $1,000-a-plate fund-raising dinner to attend.

Martin Tolchin at the New York Times reported

"President Reagan invited all members of Congress to a barbecue at the White House, while Democrats were having a $1,000-a-plate fund-raising dinner."

The federal government shut down seven times while Reagan was president and O’Neill speaker of the House.
