John Dingell calls for Senate to be abolished
By Chris Mills Rodrigo - 12/04/18 10:21 AM EST

Former Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) penned an op-ed Tuesday calling for the Senate to be abolished and for elections to be publicly funded.

Dingell, who represented Michigan in the House for nearly 60 years, wrote for The Atlantic a series of suggestions to address the "unprecedented cynicism about the nobility of public service itself."

The former lawmaker noted that in 1958 a survey from the University of Michigan found that 73 percent of Americans trusted the federal government “to do the right thing almost always or most of the time.” In 2017, the same study conducted by the Pew Research Center found that number down to just 18 percent.

One of the causes of frayed trust identified by Dingell was how a "minority of obnoxious asses can hold the entire country hostage to extremist views" because of the Electoral College system and a Senate that provides two seats to each state regardless of size.

Like a typical leftist...  he wants mob-rule by a majority... ONLY because he figures that the majority of that mob would be fellow leftists.   I think he is in for a rude awakening....

This total lack of commitment by who are now mainstream leftists to Constitutional checks and balances should worry all of us. They will not restrain themselves, nor can we depend upon the courts to reel them in.

This country is exactly a handful of senators away from these authoritarians seizing power.

What he wants has no way of happening first of all. If the Democrats held the Senate and the White House he would not be saying what he is currently saying
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

I know.   Some of my biggest fears are coming to pass.

We witnessed how George W. Bush's "methods" ended up getting us Barack Hussein Obama, ObamaCare, and a literally stagnant, if not regressive, economy..... not to mention stacking the courts with rabid leftists....for eight frigging years.  I shudder to think what Trump's presidency will result in, once he is out of office.  Scary.  I keep having this nagging thought that it is going to be much, much worse than the Obamanation.  And here I thought it couldn't get any worse than that.  Reality = it can always get worse.   **nononono*

That's just it though.   Things (the economy) are looking up right now.   Most folks aren't thinking about how bad it can and probably will get once Trump is out of office.  I really wish I could think like most folks.   :crying:

What he wants would require what the Dems dream of doing.  Tearing up the Constitution and starting from scratch with a new Progressive Constitution.

@mountaineer that's because it limits their power.  Obama referred to the Constitution as having "negative liberties"...hence the reason he viewed it as a flawed document.

Dingell obviously feels the same way.  Never mind it was his Progressive brethren led by Woodrow Wilson who changed how Senators were sent to DC.  Were the old way still in effect...he'd have nothing to bitch about.

The biggest drop that I can ever remember.  The roller coaster ride is here.
Romans 12:16-21

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

He should move to a Communist country.
AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.

This is the largest (point) drop in nearly two months, and IIRC the third largest this year.
