I voted for Reagan twice. And overall, I generally consider him one of America's better presidents. However, there were negatives that took place during his presidency that would never occur with the current president. Nearly 200 of our men were killed in Lebanon while he was president, and nothing done.
Reagan had what amounted to one of the highest tax increases in our history. For those of you too young to know, Social Security tax in 1984 before the increase was I believe 6.2% up to $32,000. There was no Medicare Tax.
Today it is 6.2% on Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare Tax with a max income of I believe $122,000. Run those numbers! HUGE DIFFERENCE, and they still do not have enough to cover the two programs long term.
And last but not least, the one act by the Reagan Administration that leaves him as somewhat a dog of history is the fact that the Social Security Trust could be robbed by Congress to spend however they see fit. Pure unadulterated thievery and chicanery. Almost no one speaks of this heinous act...no one.
I know President Trump would never do any of the above acts that were perpetrated against the American people under Reagan. For that reason alone, he stands higher and taller than Reagan ever would.
Trump has stood tall against the worst opposition I believe a president has ever had to contend with in this great country. Lesser men would weaken and implode, but he continues on. Trump has kept most of his promises he made during his campaign, which is a rare quality for anyone in politics.
Trump has promised not to weaken Social Security, which is more than I can say about what Reagan did.
Trump will win in 2020 against HR Clinton again. It would be nice if his own party supported him, which they simply have not done. True disgrace really. I hold Trump to be definitively one of the greatest presidents ever. He has restored to the American people the claim to greatness. We have been a nation that has brought freedom to the world, and too many that have come before Trump failed miserably.
