It is no accident that they point to countries like Venezuela — and to a lesser extent, Cuba and Nicaragua — as Americans’ inevitable destiny should socialism be implemented here, rather than, say, pointing to Finland. The spread of socialism across Latin America during the mid-to-late 20th century posed a much more proximate existential threat to American capitalism. The U.S. government helped overthrow the democratically elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Árbenz, in 1954, partly because they feared communism in their backyard. Indeed, nuclear warheads in Cuba had a shorter trip to U.S. soil than missiles in Russia, creating the panic that fueled the missile crisis of 1962. After revolution erupted across Central America in the late 1970s, the Reagan administration made the region a U.S. foreign-policy hot spot for much of the following decade, sending weapons and billions of dollars to help repressive military dictatorships in Nicaragua and El Salvador quell socialist uprisings.

Warning: most of the rest of this piece goes off the left-wing deep end, but I post it mainly to give you a picture of what Ocasio-Cortez represents: the Latin American brand of socialism that has failed so miserably up to this point.

I don't know about anyone else here, but am not terrified.  I do like to know who our enemies are and keep them in my sights.  I also don't particularly like being forced to be charitable  to a bunch of lowlife, lazy, entitled grifters entering our country illegally  who want our tax dollars to feed, clothe, house and care for them and their kids. 

This guy is good at espousing the socialism talking points.  I see that he like other socialists still point to Finland as a socialism success story when in reality it is far from a success.

You have to realize that ANYONE occupying the democrat-communist candidacy in that Congressional district was going to win the seat.

In places like that, the election doesn't matter so much as "getting the nomination" in the first place. The election that follows is an all-but-foregone conclusion.
