TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Federal judge denied a request to extend a Thursday afternoon deadline for recounts in tight Florida races for a US Senate seat and the governor’s office.

The federal judge slammed the state for repeatedly failing to anticipate election problems and said the Florida law on recounts appears to violate the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that decided the presidency in 2000.

“We have been the laughing-stock of the world, election after election, and we chose not to fix this,” U.S. District Judge Mark Walker said in court.

Walker vented his anger at state lawmakers but also Palm Beach County officials, saying they should have made sure they had enough equipment in place to handle this kind of a recount. Walker also said he’s not happy about the idea of extending recount deadlines without limit.

I agree. FL is a laughingstock having let this turn into another shitshow after the 2000 mess. Just shows that you can pass all the laws in the world but if dumb ass jive turkeys are running things they are meaningless.

Under Florida law, counties that are unable to complete the machine recount process by the deadline Thursday will revert to the unofficial results tabulated on Saturday. Races that remain within one quarter of one percentage point after the Thursday afternoon deadline will proceed to a manual recount. Counties will have until Sunday at noon to manually review ballots with too many or too few markings.

Florida counties have reached the deadline for submitting the results of their election recounts.

A federal judge earlier rejected a request to give counties more time beyond the 3 p.m. Thursday deadline to finish their recounts. Palm Beach County's election supervisor had warned that the county would not be able to complete the recount on time.

The election will be certified Tuesday.

Palm Beach County misses Florida recount deadline
'We gave it everything we had,' elections supervisor Susan Bucher says

Susan Bucher, Palm Beach County's elections supervisor, told reporters Thursday that her office failed to meet the 3 p.m. deadline, despite her team's best efforts.

Bucher said Palm Beach County fell behind when the ballot-counting machines overheated Tuesday night.

She said her office was required by Florida law to send the originally reported numbers to the state.

Despite missing the deadline, Bucher said voters should feel confident in the results.

"We counted every vote and we uploaded our results and they are accurate," Bucher said.

A federal judge rejected a push by Democratic Florida Sen. Bill Nelson to extend the machine recount deadline in a Thursday ruling in which the judge labeled Florida a “laughingstock” because of its election failures.

“We have been the laughingstock of the world, election after election, and we chose not to fix this,” U.S. District Judge Mark Walker said in the ruling, which he handed down on the same afternoon that Florida’s Palm Beach County missed the machine recount deadline at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Walker decided that Florida’s 67 counties will still have to submit machine recount results at 3 p.m. Thursday, reported the Associated Press. However, Walker ruled earlier Thursday morning to grant 4,000 Florida voters an extension until 5 p.m. Saturday to verify their mail-in and provisional ballots if they were rejected for signature mismatches.

Florida’s election system certainly is a laughingstock by now.
