Who is Broward County Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes?

Florida Republicans are calling for Broward Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes to be removed from office, potentially capping off a career marred by missteps and controversy.

Snipes, a Democrat, is facing both a lawsuit and calls for her removal from office for withholding information regarding how many votes remain to be counted in Florida's still-undeclared Senate race, one of three statewide recounts currently underway. The national Republican Party has said that Snipes is guilty of "incompetence and gross mismanagement."

The Broward County election official's career has been nothing short of controversial, much like the office, whose previous elections supervisor was escorted out of her office and removed from her job in 2003.

In 2018 alone, Snipes has had quite a year. A judge ruled in May that Snipes violated state and federal laws by destroying ballots from a 2016 congressional race 10 months earlier than federal elections law requires. The elections office was required to maintain all ballots in federal elections for 22 months, but Snipes ordered the destruction of those ballots after only 12 months. She claimed negligence, calling it a "mistake," and blamed it on her staff, who she said "have the responsibility of giving me information that's correct." In August, the office was admonished for illegally opening mail-in ballots, which Republicans are claiming as evidence of bias.

Those aren't the only instances of mishaps under Snipes' leadership. There have been consistent problems with long lines, missing ballot referendums, and voter counts since Snipes took the helm in 2003.

A look at Broward elections chief Brenda Snipes' long history of trouble

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/fl-ne-who-is-brenda-snipes-20181109-story.html

For 15 years, Snipes has served as Broward County’s elections chief, with mixed results. Long lines and vote counts that continued long after polls closed marred elections in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2016 and, of course, this year.

Among other issues:

-- A court ruled she had broken election law when she destroyed ballots from the 2016 election 12 months after it, instead of the 22 months required by federal law.

-- A medical marijuana amendment was left off some ballots in 2016.

-- Election results in the 2016 primary were posted on the elections office’s website before polls closed, another violation of election law.

-- In 2012, almost 1,000 uncounted ballots were discovered a week after the election

-- Broward elections supervisor illegally destroyed ballots in Wasserman Schultz race, judge rules

-- In 2004, some 58,000 mail-in ballots were not delivered to voters, leaving election officials to scramble to send new ones.

And now, after days passed in which Snipes could not or would not say how many ballots remained to be counted, and failed to give regular updates to the state every 45 minutes as required by law, she was hit with a lawsuit by Scott’s Senate campaign and the National Republican Senate Committee demanding she inform the public how many votes remained to be counted.
