The top congressional leaders from both parties declined an invitation from the White House to join President Trump on Tuesday in Pittsburgh in the wake of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Both House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) were unable to make the trip due to scheduling conflicts, while House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) also decided not to attend.
The declined invites were first reported by CNN.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump are slated to visit Pittsburgh on Tuesday, just days after Saturday's shooting.
The mayor of Pittsburgh on Monday evening suggested that the president choose a different time to visit the city rather than the day of the first of 11 funerals for the victims of the shooting.
