Which State Is Governed Best?

I recently wrote [1] about the Tax Foundation’s State Business Tax Climate Index, which is a snapshot of current competitiveness (New Jersey is in last place [2], which shouldn’t surprise anyone).

But what if we want to know which states are moving in the right direction or wrong direction?

If so, the best document to review is Chris Edwards’ Fiscal Policy Report Card on America’s Governors [3].

Any list of worst governors that does not include Jerry Brown is simply not credible. My state is right on the edge of the abyss.

Connecticut's Dan Malloy HAS to be in the basement.

I can't think of a single thing he's done right.

Taxes are up and he wants to install highway tolls.
On a per capita basis, Connecticut is as bad off as California.
Feckless leadership...he was supposed to balance the budget by getting concessions from state unions. He did nothing.

He's so bad that in deep blue Connecticut, a republican candidate is within the margin of error to win the governorship.

Victor Davis Hanson is very good, on California's malgovernance.

For example instead of building the many dams needed, to capture snow runoff water, we let the water go to the sea.

And the monney which should go for tha effort, instead funds a train to nowhere.

And Brown presides over schools, which went from best in the country in the 1960s, to nearly last now.

Brown presided over the adoption by state unions of collective bargaining, which has broken the state financially and strengthened the unions to the point hardly anyone can hold office without their sanction. He has destroyed what was once the land of milk & honey.

The only problem with that is -- the "Republican" candidate for governor (Stefanowski) was for all practical purposes A DEMOCRAT until a year ago.

He changed party affiliations because he was never going to win the democrat-communist nomination for governor.

Then he bought himself the ticket by excessive campaign spending (pretty much out of his own pocket, I reckon).

He isn't "a real Republican", and I doubt he's going to win.

Not shocked here, that my Governor Jay Inside of Washington made the very bottom of the list. Worse governor Grade F.

My governor (Justice) was elected as a Democrat. Several months later, he became a Republican.
Neither party wants him.
