Trump’s approval rating up 5 points since August: poll

President Trump's approval rating rose 5 percentage points since late August, but remains well below 50 percent heading into the midterms, according to a poll released Sunday.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 41 percent of adults approve of the president's job performance, up from 36 percent in late August. The poll found that 54 percent of those surveyed disapprove of Trump's performance.
Trump was bolstered in the latest poll by strong marks on his handling of the economy, with 49 percent of people approving of his work and 46 percent disapproving.
In the time between the two most recent ABC/Washington Post polls, the Senate confirmed Trump's second Supreme Court nominee, Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The confirmation followed a bitter fight over Kavanaugh's nomination, which ended with a 50-48 vote to put him on the high court.
Trump and Republicans have pointed to the economy and Kavanaugh's confirmation as two key issues that will unite GOP voters in next month's midterm elections.
Trump's overall approval rating has remained between 36 percent and 42 percent in each of the ABC News/Washington Post polls conducted since April 2017.
His consistently low approval numbers could hurt Republicans in the midterms, as the poll found that 55 percent of respondents would rather see Democrats control Congress to serve as a check on the president. By comparison, 39 percent said they’d prefer to see Republicans control Congress to push through Trump’s agenda.
The poll surveyed 1,144 adults from Oct. 8-11, and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
