GOP senator may miss Kavanaugh vote for daughter’s wedding

By Tal Axelrod - 10/04/18 07:22 PM EDT

A GOP senator may miss a Senate confirmation vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh this weekend because his daughter is getting married on Saturday.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) will walk his daughter down the aisle for her wedding regardless of the timing of the vote, a Daines spokesperson confirmed to The Hill.

Senate Republican leaders plan to hold a key procedural vote Friday morning, setting up a potential confirmation vote for Saturday afternoon.

It is unclear if Daines’ trip will impact the timing of the vote.

“If there is any change to timing or any announcements on votes, we’ll be sure to get the info out as we always do,” a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) office said in a statement to The Hill.

Republicans currently hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate and can only afford one defection if Democrats unanimously vote against Kavanaugh. Three Republicans remained undecided on Thursday.

Daines would be a reliable vote in favor of Kavanaugh.

I say invite all the Senators to the wedding and hold the vote at the 11th hour after everyone has been well liquored up and convinced to vote for Kavanaugh.

Maybe the daughter should've thought about that before scheduling her wedding during a legislative session.

There used to be an agreement between parties where each Senator paired off with a Senator on the opposite side of the aisle so that when one Senator could not be there because of something extraordinary like this, the other agreed to abstain from voting so that their 'non-votes' cancelled out.  The Democrats of course violated that agreement during the Obama years.

I know you've never been married.  If it happens for you, it maybe at a justice of the peace.  That takes little time.  A church wedding, with many prominent guests clearing their busy schedule, and flying in for a prominate family takes a year to plan.  Don't take my word for it.  If you know a Trumper you admire, who snagged an unfortunate 3rd or 4th spouse, ask them.  There are plans and contingency plans, because for many Americans not named Trump they only do it once, and they want to do it right.

The Senate has been in session longer than normal.  Call it ineffectiveness or just damn stupid when so many republican's need to be re-elected, but soon GOP candidates will have plenty of time.  So maybe you have a point about throwing thousands of dollars away to protect Trump from himself.  Why should an American Bride have her day when Trump bumbles the Presidency?

That is a shame when Trump and the GOP told the rats to go f*** themselves so nicely.  HE FIGHTS!!!

Trump should hire a private plane to take him to and from the wedding.

and reward this Senator's selfish betrayal?  Trump should destroy that family.  Mock the beauty of the bride and make her sorry she ever crossed our savior.  No prisoners.  You know how Trump feels about prisoners.

The only thing worse would be scheduling a wedding during the Iron Bowl.

If Senator Tester was smart, he would abstain from voting to match or 'cancel out' Daines non-vote.  It would show good faith with Montana voters without having to vote for Kavanaugh.

But then Tester isn't smart.

It's okay @mystery-ak ...they can vote Sunday.

Grab the Senator as soon as the cake is cut and put his arse on a government jet.   Schedule the vote for 9:00 am.

Go with the flow here, Myst... this nomination could use a little drama.

Congratulations to the good Senator from the State of Montana. I wish him, his family, and particularly the new couple all the best.

I have no doubt the fix for this is already in place, and I am happy there are still folks who can maintain a sense of priority.

If it were my daughter, there is not a damn thing on earth that would stop me from walking her down that aisle... and all y'all that think otherwise can go hang.
