...The veteran did not let his age stop him performing his duty for his granddaughter, with the Armed Forces saying he showed the same determination when serving his country.

During WWII, Bronislaw was captured by the Nazis but miraculously managed to escape from the Gestapo's headquarters in Lomza, north-eastern Poland.

In 1948, he was arrested again, during the communist period, and was sentenced to ten years behind bars.

He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, as well as many other honours...

Announcing his death, the National Armed Forces wrote on social media: "The national hero and insurgent of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, Major Bronislaw Karwowski [has] retired to the eternal guard.
