Democrats could flip the open U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee occupied by retiring Republican Sen. Bob Corker, if numbers captured by a new poll released Thursday hold steady.
Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen has 48 percent support among likely voters, a slim 2 percentage point lead on Republican opponent Marsha Blackburn, according to research conducted by NBC News and the Marist Institute of Public Opinion. Only 5 percent of likely voters surveyed remain undecided.
Bredesen, a former Tennessee governor, additionally enjoys more support among registered voters but the results are still within the study's margin of error.
Democrats need to gain two seats in the Senate to seize control of the upper chamber. Tennessee presents one of the party's best opportunities, despite Republicans' enduring popularity in the traditionally red state.
GOP candidates continue to have a double-digit advantage among likely voters on a generic congressional ballot. But about two-thirds of respondents have a positive view of Bredesen in comparison with 46 percent who hold a favorable opinion of Blackburn, a House lawmaker, NBC News/Marist also found.
The poll received responses from 538 likely voters between Aug. 25 to Aug. 28 via landlines and cell phones. The findings have a margin of error of plus or minus 5.1 percentage points.
