I'm really surprised ours isn't on the list yet. It is a ghost town, dirty, and everything looks very, very dated. I think the two things keeping it alive are automotive (the only halfway honest place open on Sunday) and senior citizens.

Sears is still in business?  I'll be damned.  I remember my grand dad refused to shop at them anymore back in the 60's when they abandoned their mostly downtown locations for those new fangled Mall Location out in the boonies.  He said no one would go out there!

The nearest Kmart to me closed about a year ago now. The next-closest, I stopped in earlier this year to check it out.

It may have been because it was in the morning on a weekday (I was getting my snow tires swapped out at a place down the road), but... the place was barren. I don't know if it just seemed moreso because the last time I saw it was as a kid in the late 1990s, but everything looked so spaced out, the shelves lower, and everything in general looked like it was stuck the way it was back in the 1990s, right before they went bankrupt, but with less merchandise. Let's just say it was quiet enough that instead of going to a cash register, the only person on duty rang me out at the service desk.

Amazingly, that store has survived this round of cuts.

Sears should have gone exclusively into the appliance/hardware/auto repair business decades ago.

Well, maybe.  But I think Sears'biggest problem has been a lack of customer service and shoddy merchandise.  Sticking with only certain products would not have helped.

The clothing racks and displays on the sales floor look like a Salvation Army or Goodwill outlet.

Perhaps they should go back to offering home kits, where you could build your dream home on your own lot for just a few thousand dollars.

They're all 'Classics' now.

Agree.

Frankly, I'm surprised any Sears stores are still open.

It's hard enough to find a Macy's anymore, let alone Sears or KMart. JCP is next, looks like.

There are many reasons why Sears is a mere shell of its once vibrant retail self.  Not in any particular order but just a few off the top of my head.

Poor management that failed to adapt to a changing market and embrace online market and create an online presence.  Think about it. Sears invented at home shopping more than a century ago. How could you not take the next step?

Instead sears strategy for growth was to buy/merge with another out dated horse and buggy  retailer....K-Mart to form Sears Holdings.

Installing Eddie Lampert a scum sucking hedge fund dumbass as CEO.

They squander their most valuable resource, its brand name products.  You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't own at least one of there signature product lines.  Kenmore. Craftsman. Die Hard Battery's. They sullied those products by installing cheap parts that broke constantly failed and the public abandon them faster than a 1970 GM econobox for a Toyota.

Speaking of appliances.  Even Whirlpool (Maytag, KitchenAid and Jenn-Air)  stopped selling to Sears because of slow pay and bad credit caused by lack of sales.

And as mentioned by several others.  Lack of customer service or no customer service at every level.  From the store floor to the phone  to the internet.  The Sears stores of old hired wonderful associates.  Professional people who were trained and had product knowledge.  Today, if you can find a sales person to help you, it will be like talking to a stoner who couldn't tell you where the bathroom was.

Put a fork in Sears.  They are done.
