  • A huge wall of dust rolled through Phoenix on Thursday during the area's second monsoon storm in four days
  • Strong storms lashed Phoenix on Monday, downing power lines and causing 120,000 people to lose power
  • Dust storms are common during Arizona's monsoon season that runs from mid-June to the end of September
  • Last August, scientists attributed global warming to Arizona’s frequent and monstrous monsoons
  • With the monsoons come thunderstorms, flash floods, and dramatic dust clouds, also known as haboobs

We have had three haboobs so far this season.  It is not bad when there is a nice thunderstorm with cool lightning behind it..  The last one a couple of days ago was without any moisture.  It just stirred up dirt in the air.  {cough cough}

My baby sister and her family were at Lake Mead recently.  She had never seen an haboob before.  They were all ordered off of Lake Mead until the haboob had passed by the lake.  One whole day of jet skiing down the tubes.  Haboob!

Bummer in the 115-degree summer!

Thank you ever so much!  It is most certainly not as bad as the floods in Virginia nor the firestorms in California.  We count our blessings that the only bad weather we get normally are haboobs and unbelievable heat.

I did, at one time in my life. Owned a place off of Bethany Home Road. But not today. I lived in Phoenix in the late 90s. I've gone back to visit friends once in a while but have not lived there since then.

These are the first "monsoon storms" I've experienced so far. They come on suddenly and are gone in about an hour - at least so far.

Some are followed by rain, some are not. The rain cleans ups the mess pretty well so it is highly desirable.

The dust is very fine and more like powder than sand. If you stay inside they aren't much of an issue. Not good to be caught on the road when they strike.

One other note...

It is fire season in California where I came from. When you live in the wooded hills it is a very scary time where total disaster can strike very quickly. Monsoons in Arizona are a much better experience than the fire season in California...
