McLennan County will soon enter the extreme drought phase, according to the state climatologist. With crops showing signs of the near-record dry weather, the area’s farmers are already feeling the heat.

One local farmer and rancher was forced to sell half his cattle herd because of tough conditions and a shortage of hay to fill the gap and said cotton crops are the worst he has seen in his 38 years working in the area.

“It’s going to get worse before it gets better,” State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon said.

In the past 10 months, since Oct. 1, Waco has gotten 13.26 inches of rain, he said. In his 111 years of records, only 1925 and 1918 were drier.

Remember, we're only talking McLennan County and some of the surrounding area.  And, yes, we are going into D3 here.

Added:  I am so thankful that we are not in a 2011 scenario right now, and keep reminding people of that. It's bad, but it was much worse in 2011.  Of course, if you're in this area and having to sell your cattle because you didn't get enough hay, that's sort of a pointless statement.

After getting 46 inches of rain in 3 day period last August, I don't mind a little drought.

Last August we were barely brushed by the outer bands- wish that deluge would have spread a little more evenly.

2011 was a real drought.  Had to sell off 1/3 of the cattle was there was nothing for them to eat but dirt.

bought hay shipped from Alabama for exorbitant prices.

This year, things are going ok, not any big worries compared to that year.
