John Stossel: Are looney liberals and smug celebrities about to put an end to tipping?

Union protestors and celebrity advocates have decided that waiters’ tips aren’t big enough.

They are upset that in 43 states, tipped workers can be paid a lower minimum wage, as low as $2.13 an hour.

Not fair! Shout celebrities like Jane Fonda, who recorded commercials saying, “That’s barely enough to buy a large cup of coffee!”

Why do people whose only job is to read and act out words written by other people suddenly believe that their opinions have weight when it comes to things like economics,foreign-policy, culture, etc. etc.?
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Because they all tell each other so.

They are also quite frequently, lousy tippers.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Because Americans, in particular, are stupid. Most ordinary people believe that John Wayne was an actual cowboy and that Sylvester Stallone was a real soldier. Recently, I saw an interview with Alex Trebek and he was laughing at his own audience. He said he simply cannot believe how many people think he is some kind of genetically enhanced super-genius. It's just cards folks. I'm just reading what's on the card, dummy.

People are stupid. That's why they listen to celebrities, many of whom never graduated from high-school.

If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

But.... nobody (not even Jane Fonda) wants to be known as a (shudder)....

bad tipper.

Fonda turned down the role of Helen Keller because she couldn't remember the lines.

And part of this comes from the fact that we, as humans, tend to believe that our value system is what’s best for others. Of course, we can’t believe that “others” might not agree

My ex used to walk off the morning shift with at least 100 bucks in tips... And that was before they were required to declare. Now, that is the much desired morning shift, reserved for the very best, and she was among the best of them.

At the time, I was making around $125 a day with a pick and shovel.

So don't cry me a river for the waitresses.

They think their magnificent presence is tip enough.

Rich people don't tip. They look at it as 'giving money away'. And they just cannot do that.
That's why so many upscale restaurants include a 'gratuities' fee in the bill itself. If it is in the bill rich people will pay it.
They will pay the bill. But they will never just give away money freely for nothing.

That was not my experience, other than a few cases.  Celebrities were best.  And lower-middle-class white families.

But most of the time, the richest gave good tips.
