I don't know what to say to that.

Texas isn't really the south.  Parts of it, sure, but we grew up in TexMex and German areas.  No grits.

I just don't like 'em, @roamer_1.  They weren't common when I was growing up, and I never developed a taste for them.

I knew I liked you.

Well, yeah... But then, neither is Montana.
I just wish  could get at good (cheesey) grits. I'd have em every day.
All I can get at usually up in here is instant grits and pone. Every now and then, the Albertson's gets in the real thing, and I get em for a couple weeks. But then they're gone again for months.

Probably best, as I suck at making em. Still better than instant grits.

From what you're describing, it's obvious to me that I've never had grits.

Only grits I ever tasted were from Waffle House.  They sucked.

I'm thinking cheese and jalapeños could make them edible.

Can you order grits on Amazon?

Maybe it's an acquired taste - My kin on my Mom's side were maybe a generation removed from Missouri/Mississippi (She is from Kansas), and my longest acquaintance in my wild days was a sweet Georgia peach (I should have married that woman). So, they were around for me until I got married at 25.

Waffle house is gonna be instant grits. Gak.
Find you a Southern gal and ask her for some cheesey grits. That's the only way you will get the real thing.

I have no idea. I am old school. I have no means of ordering online without going and getting a debit card loaded up. I have done it from time to time, out of necessity, but not something I do. Heck, I can't even tell you the last time I wrote a check.

If anyone wants to give them a try I have ordered grits from Anson Mills.  They're in South Carolina and offer the old fashioned heirloom varieties of grits and some other grains and flours.  Good quality stuff and if you follow the directions they send on how to cook what you get you'll get perfectly cooked grits.

Has to be hominy grits or I won't touch it.

One time, someone told me corn was empty nutritionally, I don't know if that is so.

I guess, corn and hominy are the same, I really don't know. What I read seems to say so.

Hominy is what they call the corn that is processed a certain way for grits.

Fact check: True

Of course over here everything east of the Trinity River looks just like Louisiana.

Still as southern as I am, I just as soon eat chalk than grits.  Actually they are pretty close and the same.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

I made the mistake of ordering cheese grits at Waffle House once.  They served me a small dish of lukewarm grits with a slice of cold American cheese slapped across the top.

I love grits.  I love Waffle House.  But the two together?  Well, it didn't work out.

Like the time Waffle House said they were out of salad and offered to substitute a waffle.   :pondering:

Y'alls mamas must be horrible cooks for you to not appreciate the subtle science and precise art of a well prepared grit.  The best part is leftovers with crumbled breakfast sausage mixed in, poured into a loaf pan and allowed to set up overnight in the friedge. Then you turn out the loaf, cut slices, dredge each side in flour and pan fry it to golden brown on each side.
