Senators seek to prohibit Trump from quitting NATO

A group of U.S. senators worried about President Donald Trump’s commitment to NATO introduced a bill Thursday that would prohibit a U.S. president from pulling out of the alliance.

“Regrettably, President Trump’s mistreatment of our closest allies has raised doubts about America’s commitment to the trans-Atlantic alliance and the values of defense,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in a statement.

Ultimately nthe Senate would have to approve leaving anyway.

NATO was formed to protect Western Europe against the Soviet Union which has since ceased to exist.  What the hell is it good for now?

Another snipe hunt. Trump is not trying to leave NATO but trying to have it mean something.

As out injured boys coming back from Afghanistan who get emergency treatment in Landstuhl. It's mission has changed and evolved with the times just as military technology and tactics.

We have used NATO bases as staging points for the WOT. We actually get more out of it than most contributing countries as we are the ones leading the wars.

"Quitting" NATO is something of a mushy standard.  The President is legally bound by it the treaty, but as a practical mattter, that's kind of meaningless.  Nothing in the Treaty require the U.S. to maintain a physical military presence in Europe.  Trump could theoretically withdraw all U.S. troops from Europe without being in breach of the Treaty.
