Ryan: Trump 'trolling people' by threatening revoking clearances
By Scott Wong - 07/24/18 10:59 AM EDT

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) suggested President Trump is “trolling” several former top intelligence officials by threatening to revoke their security clearance.

“I think he’s trolling people honestly,” Ryan told reporters on Tuesday. “This is something that is in the purview of the executive branch. I think some of these people have lost their clearance already; some people keep their clearances.

“That’s something that the executive branch deals with. That’s not really in our purview,” he added.

I don't think Paul Ryan quite understands the meaning of the term "trolling".

And of course, Rand Paul has asked the president to revoke some clearances.

Making a statement to elicit a reaction.  It fits.  They look a little silly threatening to revoke the clearance of Comey and McCabe, however.  It’s FBI policy to do it when someone is fired.  They’ve already lost it.

Go away, Paul.

I second the motion! And the sooner the better!

I think when some with a clearance demands a President be tried for treason, that should elicit an automatic revocation because they've revealed a motive for misusing that information.  Just about everybody on the list of 6 or seven fall into that category, including Panetta and Hayden.  They have proved beyond a reasonable doubt they are capable of abusing that clearance to the detriment of the country.  Especially if they lied to Congress about covered material (I'm looking straight at Brennan and Clapper here).
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16

I would very much like to know when the rules changed and allowed people no longer occupying the slot requiring a clearance to keep one.  Does anyone know the answer to that?

It may be "FBI policy" to do it.... but considering the recent past revelations about "FBI policy"... or rather, what isn't or shouldn't be "FBI policy"....

most rational folks probably have little to no expectations that the FBI will adhere to "FBI policy".....

unless it suits a particular agenda.

Just sayin....

The Tale of the Two Pauls

OTOH you have twice attacked Sen. Rand Paul with what Scott Adams calls a brilliant play. Possible 2nd term VP.

and cowardly Paul Ryan, just a quitter, in the fight of a lifetime. Weak, failed VP candidate. 2nd rate Speaker.

Don't know, it's not my bailiwick, but my understanding is Senior Executives of the various agencies get to keep their clearances as a courtesy, the excuse being they can provide "valuable advice." Right-o.

That's why I don't agree McCabe and Comey automatically lost theirs, despite what others who are more intelligent than I are saying.  I've seen too many violations of what should be SOP.

There are really two parts top all of this.  Clearance AND access.  Presumably when one losses or gives up a slot their access ends right then and there regardless of their clearance. I highly doubt that was/is the case currently in the FBI or DOJ.  Just call me cynical.

Well you've found an article, but I don't see Comey, Clapper, and McCabe disagreeing on the WH assertion.

I’m only addressing whether two specific people have a clearance to revoke.  They don’t.

Good to know.   But I still don't have faith in the current FBI to do what they 'should' do.  Once lost, my trust is hard to get back.

Can't call you cynical unless I say I am too, because I agree with you about this.  Despite what the great big giant brains may tell me, I am cynical at my core, and expert assurances will buy you a cup of Macchiato if you pair that up with a Fiver or two.

That's a sad result of all of this.  The FBI was universally trusted and admired a few years ago.  They've lost that trust now, and as you say @XenaLee it will be hard for them to get it back.

Well.... I don't know about that "universally trusted and admired" part.   J. Edgar left a rather large stain on the FBI, from what I've read.  Let's face it.... absolute power corrupts absolutely... and these alphabet agencies need a LOT more oversight than what they have been under.  Oversight and consequences for their over-reach and abuse of power.
