Dan Coats' remarkable rebuke to President Trump
By Kate Andersen Brower

In a remarkable response, Coats sent a statement not long after, standing by his findings. "We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security." The statement reasserting the intelligence community's assessment was unprecedented because it was not cleared through official White House channels and reveals a widening chasm between Trump and his intelligence chief.

Coats has long been a critic of Putin and, when he was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, he was banned from Russia when he called for stronger sanctions after Russia's annexation of Crimea. Undeterred from holding Russia to account, Coats said days ago that "the warning lights are blinking red again" regarding Russian cyber interference.

When I interviewed Coats last December to talk about the relationship between Vice President Mike Pence, a friend of his from Indiana, and Trump, I was surprised to discover how influential Pence was in Coats's decision to take the job. He reluctantly delayed retirement after Pence pleaded with him to accept.

Former (R) Senator of Indiana, Dan Coats. He seems to be a major player in this week's events. He's in the news a lot currently.

The above, really is more of a news story than straight-out commentary.  And despite it being CNN.

"Continue to provide unvarnished intelligence".  Seriously.  What is this unvarnished intelligence, Mr. Coats?  All we definitively know is:  no American helped Russia, and Russia's efforts did not change one vote.

We do know Mexico had help from Americans in meddling with our elections and we know Mexico's interference affected our vote tally.

We know Great Britain was assisted by American intelligence agencies to influence the election in the United States and that their efforts are now the basis for a march to impeach a duly elected US President.

We know foreign money poured in the Clinton campaign in violation of existing law to influence our election.

Yet not a peep from the esteemed Mr. Coats about this. No concern about what these efforts have done to the sanctity of our democracy.

Why?  What's in it for him to ignore all the actual, tangible election interference and focus on Russia and now shore up the claims of "treason" --- the new call for impeachment after the collapse of "collusion".

Thirty-two years in Congress, stints as ambassador, lobbyist, media pundit do not mean Coats' sh*t doesn't stink.  All it means is we know where the stink is coming from.

When Dan Coats wins the votes of 63 million people his “remarkable” rebuke might carry some weight with me.

But as it stands now Dan Coats was part of the problem: thirty five years and four administrations of failed foreign policies and feckless UN-style diplomacy.

I’ve got way more confidence in Donald Trump’s opinion on the best way to precede with Putin than I have in Dan Coats’.
