Republicans overwhelmingly back Trump's performance at Putin summit: Poll

The vast majority of Republicans support the way President Trump handled his first summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, according to a new Axios poll.

The poll said 80 percent of Republicans approved of Trump’s performance, while only 8 percent of Democrats feel the same way.

The partisan split could be seen in other things the poll measured. For example, 85 percent of Republicans think the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 elections is “more of a distraction,” while on the other side, 85 percent of Democrats feel that the possibility of coordination between the two entities is a “serious issue.”

In the joint press conference with Putin Monday, Trump said he did not think Russia meddled in U.S. elections, but later gave a prepared statement where he said he misspoke, and meant to say that he agreed with the intelligence community that Russia did interfere.

In this Axios poll conducted July 16-17 and released Thursday, 91 percent of Republicans said they approved of Trump’s presidency so far, and 64 percent of Democrats say they disapprove of Trump.

Sensible people want results and not mesmerizing blather. The people sticking with Trump are sensible people.

Why would, I meant to say wouldn't they stick with him?

And I question whether it is a good thing for Trump to want Russia to question Americans?  What are we doing here?

Aahhh, the vagaries of six dimensional chess.

I'll forget all about this nonsense in an hour, when I'm at work in a warehouse that will reach 105 by 2 PM. The good news is I'll drop another few pounds, though I may suffer a bit of heat exhaustion.

If they back his performance at the summit, do they back his flip flop on his statement?

Trump's mass hypnosis is still working.

Obviously your intent is to demean Trump's supporters. like many other detractors who have called them low IQ, uneducated, etc.

Even a reference of mesmerized Nazis in formation listening to Hitler.

However you inadvertently acknowledge an ability that any politician should hope to learn. IOW an ability to influence, convince,, persuade etc.

Three Presidents come to mind, as having very effective communication abilities; namely JFK, Reagan and Obama.

If I was a supporter of Sen. Ted Cruz, I would advise him to go get as much of an ability for "mass hypnosis," as possible.

Author and trained hypnotist Scott Adams, who predicted Trump's win in 2015, notes that Trump was influenced by "The "Power of Positive thinking," Rev. Norman Vincent Peale.

Finally a preacher, a business manager, a teacher and a parent, ALL use communication to persuade, convince, influence people to act in desired ways.

Gens. Eisenhower and Patton were very effective. I am glad they could use mass hypnotism, as you call it.

Another example of highly effective communication, persuasion, etc. was Rev. Martin Luther King. He used it for good, many would admit.

@truth_seeker

It wasn't "obvious" because I didn't mean that. That is your interpretation.
Another example is Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick".  He kept making "speeches" to the crew to keep them in fever pitch to take down Moby Dick even though it meant their death and all died except one who had the Biblical name, Ishmael.
During the campaign, Trump kept making "speeches" in rapid succession, keeping people in fever pitch, telling one lie after another and they still belive him, lie after lie.  Most people are not on political forums, they are livng their life, going to work, coming home, feeding the family, watching maybe one news broadcast, going to bed and doing the same thing the next day, day after day. Normally, a president is believed by the masses, so they still believe him as they did during the campaign.

News of this present conflagration Trump started, may get to some of those people living normal lives.  It will likely take something greater than this, however, for them to finally realize this president can't tell the truth and it is dangerous to have an habitual liar as president.

@Night Hides Not

Here about 30 miles north of Dallas, this week is 104 - 105 every day.  We went to a casino yesterday (I won over $500), and as we traveled I saw men working on a train track and made the comment I didn't know how they did that in this heat.  Bob said if they have been working as the temperature gradually went higher, day after day, they could do it, but if they were suddenly put in that heat from a cool place, they would go down with heat stroke.

Every road we travel in this area is either under construction or repairs are being done.  Population is growing leaps and bounds here and construction of apartments and houses is going full blast.  Everywhere one looks, one sees this. Men and women who want a job can easily get one in the construction going on here.  They would have work for many years.

They've been quick enough to disown him on other issues but there was absolutely nothing to criticize about the Putin meeting.

The democrats are desperate.  I thought this might be their last shot but apparently they have a few more bbs.

They already have.

It doesn't matter what position he suddenly bounces off of to do a 180 in comment and policy, they back Trump no matter what he says or does.

Thre were a couple of things Trump said I disagreed with, but the over the top response by the pearl clutchers on the fainting couch was and continues to be so ridiculous that they're looking far more assy right now.

I may question Trump's performance, but I welcome any attempt to have better relations with Russia.  Maybe it will work, maybe it won't, but it doesn't hurt to try a different approach.

Yeah, because it was a big nothing. The fact that the DC slugs got the vapors over it just proves what a nothingburger it was.

Trump's mass hypnosis is still working.

It's just tribal politics at work.  Anything a tribe member does will be defended by the other tribe members.  Anything the other tribe does is to be mistrusted.  As tribal affiliation dwindles, both parties are becoming more strident.

How did this 'different approach' work out?  Take note of which finger Lavrov is using.

Ahhh yes,  where was the "outrage", then....or when Obama said “This is my last election … After my election I have more flexibility,”

Yeah, but.... I choose to think that his choice of fingers there was directly in response to the fact of it being Hillary.  lolol
