Economy adds 213K jobs in June, unemployment ticks up to 4 percent
By Vicki Needham - 07/06/18 08:33 AM EDT

The U.S. economy added a solid 213,000 jobs in June, a stronger number than expected and a sign of the labor market's steady strength even as concerns mount about President Trump's trade policy.

The unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 4 percent from 3.8 percent as 601,000 workers jumped into the labor market, the Labor Department reported on Friday.

The economy has added jobs for 92 straight months, beginning in October 2010 under President Obama, the longest streak on record.

Job gains also rose 37,000 more than previously reported in April and May.

After revisions, job gains have averaged 211,000 per month over the past three months.

My first instinct is to ask about the Labor Force Participation Rate, but seeing how they include the ages 18 to 65 in this stat, I am beginning to question even this as a measure of the overall health of the job market. A huge chunk of those between age 18 to 22 are still in school and large number of those above 62 ( the eligible age to get social security ), are already retired.

From 2006 to 2016, the U.S. civilian labor force participation rate has hovered in the 62 to 67 range, with a fairly consistent decrease in the participation rate since 2009.

When the unemployment rate was falling under President Obama, Republicans kept harping on the Labor force Participation Rate to indicate how deceptive that measure is. well, what's good for the goose should be good for the gander.

I'd like to know what this measure is at this point in time under Trump.

Some other highlights:

Manufacturing (+36K): Up on auto (+12K) rebound after fire led to factory shutdowns

Retail (-21K): Falls on weak Food (-9K) and weak Merchandise (-18K). Merchandise stores is Toys-R-Us bankruptcy layoffs

Professional Services (+50K): Strong on the back of white collar technical workers (+25K). relatively weak Temp workers (+9K) suggests some weakness: either lack of supply (insufficient qualified workers at level of pay) or demand (employer demand is softer than surveys relate)

Healthcare (+35K): Higher payrolls create more demand for healthcare

I agree. People who'd given up have found new hope.
