British energy major BP said Monday it started up the massive Shah Deniz 2 gas development in the Caspian Sea designed to create a major new natural gas pathway to Europe.

The $28 billion project is now delivering gas to Turkey with the plan of feeding gas to all of Europe once the Southern Gas Corridor pipeline expansion project is completed by 2020.

The current concept for Shah Deniz Stage 2 includes:

two new bridge-linked offshore platforms.

26 gas production wells which will be drilled with 2 semi-submersible rigs.

500 km of subsea pipelines will link the wells with the onshore terminal.

upgrade of the offshore construction vessels

expansion of the Sangachal terminal to accommodate the new gas processing and compression facilities.

Note to self: do not buy BP.  Transiting Turkey is not good business.
