Fitzgerald’s officer of the deck faces court-martial Tuesday for fatal collision
By: Geoff Ziezulewicz

The Navy on Monday released the first details regarding three junior officers charged for their alleged roles in the destroyer Fitzgerald’s collision with a merchant vessel last summer, an incident that killed seven sailors.

Two of the officers remain unidentified, and Navy officials said their names will be made public at their hearing this week.

Lt. j.g. Sarah Coppock was the officer of the deck, or OOD, early on June 17, when the Fitz was steaming off Japan, according to a charge sheet released by the service.

This is unfair and unjust. The CO of the ship is the one that should be court-martialed,not some "been in the Navy almost a whole week" Ltjg,which is the lowest officer rank. 2nd Lt's in the US Army aren't allowed to decide when to eat unless they consult the NCO that allegedly works under their command. The reason for this is a 0-1 is a officer that is taking baby steps,not an experienced officer. You do NOT put one of these people in command of a war ship after dark when the senior officers are all asleep! Doing so is a freaking dereliction of duty,and a court-martial offense. It would be like putting a USMC or USA 2nd Lt in charge of an infantry battalion on a nighttime combat assault. Seriously. You are putting the LEAST experienced or qualified officer aboard the ship in total command of a warship at night,despite over half of the enlisted sailors aboard being more qualified,and allowing the Captain and the Executive Officer,who SHOULD be in command at night when the CO is sleeping,off Scot free.

How the HELL does this make ANY sense?

No kidding. The CORRECT headline should be "Navy Commander is at fault for allowing VERY junior officers to command his ship at night without proper supervision or training."

This ain't a male-female thing. It is a piss-poor leadership and placing the blame on someone defenseless thing.

People learn how to make the correct decisions in situations like that from gaining experience under more senior and more qualified officers,and asking them what they are doing and why they are doing it. You just don't dump them in deep water and then expect them to learn how to swim on their own.

This was a COMMAND FAILURE.

I learned a good concept from a professor of management:

"You CAN delegate authority, but you CAN NOT delegate responsibility."

At the time it squared with my entire life experience. (I had served in the military already)

This case has nothing to do with "females."

@Fishrrman

Two 0-2's and one 0-1 in charge of a combat ship at sea in foreign waters after dark,with not a single senior officer on deck. Or even awake.

This is NOT your Father's Navy.
