The bones of an extinct species of cannibal cavemen are the oldest pre-human remains ever found in Europe, scientists have discovered.

The ‘human fossils’ were dug up in Spain and have been dated to between 772,000 and 949,000 years ago.

They belong to a species called Homo antecessor which was believed to have practised cannibalism – making them the earliest proto-humans known to have eaten their own kind.

The remains were found in Atapuerca Gran Dolina in Spain, which is a rich archaeological site focused around a cave complex.
