Should We Cool Earth?

Amid climate inaction, scientists confront an idea that scares them.
By Nathaniel Scharping

Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, spewing millions of tons of ash and chemicals into the atmosphere. Over the next year, large parts of Earth cooled by almost a full degree Fahrenheit.

Volcanoes historically have caused some of the planet’s sharpest temperature drops. In addition to ash and fire, they belch sulfur dioxide that lingers as a fine particle spray called an aerosol. These aerosols help Earth’s atmosphere reflect incoming light, creating a cooling effect.

Some scientists speculate that seeding such sulfur aerosols — absent fiery eruptions — could someday be a Hail Mary to counteract climate change. The idea is called geoengineering. Picture fleets of aircraft ferrying sulfur across the stratosphere year-round.

Oh, yeah, because Ice ages are such wonderful things for humankind.

Oh, wait. Humanity has traditionally done best during the warmer intervals. Just think of how much landmass would have more survivable winters if it was a few degrees warmer, and how much would be uninhabitable if it were a few degrees colder. Where I live was once under over 2km of Ice, and dammit, I don't want my property values going down because some twit in SoCal wants to save on their air conditioning.

As a general proposition, we human beings cannot cool the planet any more than we can warm it.

When "science" fails to eschew either politics or hubris, it can no longer honestly claim to be motivated by an interest in discovering truth.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Earth...
Is and always has been a tempestuous cauldron.
Claiming to be able to "control" the Earth is the epitome of narcissism.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

Sounds like New Hampshire weather.  We had a cool spring, and then went straight into high summer.  But, it will make late September all that much more welcome.

What arrogance.  1)  Today's weather is perfect and 2)  We can make it happen.

Causing enough cooling that half the planetary population would starve? Sure. Maybe no longer than a mere decade or two, but that would do the Georgia guidestones thing.

If there is a need to eff things up, I look to the people in government first.
