Iran attacks Israel directly for the first time ever as it fires 20 shells from Syria

Iranian forces fired 20 rockets from Syria at Israeli front-line military positions in the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said, marking the first Iran has directly attacked Israel - a day after Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Iran nuclear deal.

The attack, early on Thursday, triggered an Israeli reprisal - shelling Iranian positions in the Syrian town of Quneitra near the border - and further escalating heightened tensions between the two bitter enemies in neighbouring Syria.

The Israeli military said its Iron Dome rocket defence system intercepted some of the incoming projectiles, while others caused only minimal damage. There were no Israeli casualties.

Explosions were then heard in Damascus, with planes overhead.
