The news of the release comes as U.S.-North Korea relations have reached a relatively constructive and warm phase. It marks a considerable de-escalation from last year, when Trump and Kim exchanged heated barbs that stoked fears the world was on the brink of nuclear conflict. The North also repeatedly tested missiles and threatened the U.S. territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

You can say a lot about the chatter going on with NK right now in regards to defusing the situation, but this is a tangible event that I don't think would happen in the past.

I agree.  The last 3 or 4 presidents have given the NKs money to appease them, rather than tell them to shape up.

Yeah. I think the last time we got one home alive we had to send a briefcase full of cash and a Clinton. Unfortunately they sent the Clinton back.

Prisoners were released under Clinton and Obama, but under agreements of appeasement and compromise. Kim is not going away any time soon but that handshake on the border would have earned the above two presidents a Nobel Peace Prize.
