Police believe they have finally captured the Golden State Killer, a serial murderer and rapist suspected of terrorizing southern California nearly 50 years ago.

Late Tuesday night, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department arrested Joseph James DeAngelo Jr on two murder charges, Fox 40 reports. 

The 72-year-old man, who is believed to have been an Auburn police officer fired for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellent, is said to be linked to a dozen unsolved homicides, almost 50 rapes and 120 home burglaries that spanned a decade starting in the late 1970s.

You have got to me shitting me. They finally caught this guy? He has been taunting the stupid cops for decades. They got within feet of catching him a few times but he was able to slip away. It's been an embarrassment for the Po Po.

I've no idea about this website but I quote this article, below is Michelle McNamera as mentioned in the article. Maybe this is originally from the NY Magazine anyway, she was writing a book on this case:

In 2006, she started a blog, True Crime Diary, dedicated to discussing and revisiting unsolved cases. She saw in cold cases a personal challenge she couldn’t resist — the colder, the better. The Golden State Killer was the coldest case of all, and the one that exploded her fascination into a full-blown obsession.

Well this is odd.  Was doing a search on  Joseph James DeAngelo Jr ... trying to find a current pic.... and apparently there's a police officer in Citrus Heights, CA (way south of Sacramento), that same age, that same name.....

but still no pic.   Hmmmm.....

I listened to the press conference live, and they emphasized the large role, that DNA played in solving the crime

Some of the crimes were in Orange County, btw. And the OC DA spoke at the press conference.

Authorities have arrested a former police officer who is suspected of being one of California’s most prolific serial killers and rapists — the Golden State killer.

A local and federal task force apprehended the suspect late Tuesday evening, after tying him to the crimes through “surveillance and discarded DNA,” said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.

In the 40 years since the Original Night Stalker began his campaign of terror in Sacramento and moved south through Oakland, Santa Barbara and Orange counties, he had remained unidentified. The attacker was also dubbed the East Area rapist and the Golden State killer, and authorities say he is responsible for 12 killings, 45 rapes and more than 120 residential burglaries between 1976 and 1986.

Based upon reports DeAngelo  had an abnormaly small penis.

Police said one girl age 15 was technicially still a virgin after he raped her and told one women after raping her other woman would laugh at him. . No doubt this is where his hated women might have risen.

I think he had to be sweating the DNA technology for years knowing that they had his on record but didn't have a recent sample of his to test. It was only a matter of time before they matched his to the recovered samples from one of his victims.
It will be interesting to read the story of how they narrowed it down to him as the prime suspect.

He moved his crime spree from Northern California to the South. I scan the articles, I'm not sure if he could be responsible for some crimes that were pinned on the Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez. Some articles mention this.

Ummm.......... he didn't rape women because they laughed at him.  He raped women because he is a monster.
