Insight: How intel assets laid the groundwork for Syria strikes

20th April 2018 - 13:10 GMT | by Grant Turnbull in London

The coordinated strikes against Bashar al-Assad’s chemical weapons facilities in the early hours of 14 April were a significant show of force by the US, UK and France, with advanced stand-off weaponry fired from bomber and fighter aircraft as well as surface and sub-surface naval vessels.

Much attention has been given to the kinetic aspect of this as-yet-unnamed operation that struck chemical weapon targets in both Damascus and Homs; at least one weapon – the French MdCN cruise missile – was fired in anger for the first time. A total of 105 precision weapons were fired at three facilities to disable Syria’s chemical weapons infrastructure.
